Can Your PC Run The Last of Us Part I?

The Last of Us might be the biggest name in video games right now. Following a wildly successful TV adaptation that has even surpassed House of the Dragon in viewership, The Last of Us continues making waves by bringing The Last of Us Part I out of PlayStation exclusivity and making it available for PCs. With all the success the franchise has garnered lately, there are going to be a lot of PC players who will be interested in picking up this game.

However, given the intense graphics utilized in The Last of Us Part I and the fact that it was previously a PlayStation 5 exclusive, many PC gamers may be wondering if their hardware will be able to handle it. As that is likely going to be the deciding factor for many who want to buy this game, here's a rundown of the PC specifications required to play The Last of Us Part I.

The Last Of Us Part I's CPU Requirements

The minimum CPU requirement needed to run The Last of Us Part I is either an Intel Core i7-4770K or an AMD Ryzen 5 1500X. For such a high-end game, this is actually a surprisingly low starting point. In particular, the Intel Core i7-4770K Processor turns 10 years old this year, so most recently bought or built Gaming PCs may already meet this requirement. Recommended settings require either an Intel Core i7-8700 or an AMD Ryzen 5 3600X. These processors are roughly only five years old, which makes for a bit of a leap forward, though even this is likely still very manageable for many.

Further, Naughty Dog has listed requirements for both Performance Mode and Ultra Mode settings of the game. CPU requirements for the highest of these mean either an Intel Core i5 12600K or an AMD Ryzen 9 5900X, both of which are less than two years old and still sell at a high price. So while many players might already have the required processor to play The Last of Us Part I at the minimum or recommended setting, it's likely that very few are going to be able to use Ultra Mode.

In terms of graphics cards, players will need either an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4 GB) or an AMD Radeon 470 (4 GB). These were released in 2014 and 2016, respectively, so it may continue to be the case that many interested players might already have the components they need. For recommended settings, players will need either an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super (8 GB) or an AMD Radeon RX 5800 XT (8 GB). This makes sense as Returnal lists similar GPU requirements, and that is another game with high-end graphics that was previously a PlayStation 5 exclusive.

The game's Ultra requirements include either an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 or an AMD RX 7900XT. These graphics cards are both still under six months old at this time, making them without a doubt the biggest barrier between the recommended and Ultra modes.

Across all versions, The Last of Us Part I requires 100 GB of storage space with an SSD recommendation, though for RAM, it requires 16 GB at the minimum and recommended level, with a jump to 32 GB at the Performance and Ultra levels. The 16 GB of RAM requirement has been becoming increasingly common among big titles in recent memory, so many players may already be able to meet that benchmark, though the 32 GB goal may be another category where many players fall short. All put together, though, most dedicated PC gamers will likely be able to play The Last of Us Part I at the minimum and recommended levels with little issue.
