Did Marvel Just Reveal Baby Groot Remembers His Past Life?

I Am Groot seems to have just changed MCU canon by suggesting that Baby Groot remembers his past life in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Released on Disney+, I Am Groot is a series of shorts about Baby Groot’s adventures as he grows up alongside the Guardians. Although all the shorts focus on Groot as a child, they take place at different points across the MCU timeline, spread between Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Avengers: Infinity War. With Marvel labeling the shorts as part of MCU Phase 4, one episode of the series appears to ret-con Baby Groot's connection to the original Groot.

The possibility of I Am Groot being in the MCU timeline is important due to the events in season 1, episode 5, “Magnum Opus.” In this final short of the first season of the series, Groot scavenges for art supplies around the Guardians of the Galaxy’s ship. With these supplies, he is able to create a family portrait of the Guardians. This drawing depicts a giant version of Groot using his arms to encircle his family, including Rocket, Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax.

Baby Groot’s picture resembles adult Groot’s final sacrifice at the end of the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Groot grew into a giant sphere to encase the rest of the Guardians as the spaceship that they were on crashed. While this saved his friends, Groot died from the impact. The drawing of Groot's long branch arms surrounding the other Guardians is reminiscent of this event, hinting that Baby Groot might have retained some memories of adult Groot's life. In this way, I Am Groot might have contradicted the previously established MCU canon, confirmed by James Gunn, which has always held that Baby Groot did not remember events experienced by the original Groot.

Why Baby Groot Has No Memories from Guardians of the Galaxy

Although it is unclear if I Am Groot is MCU canon, some facts have been established about Baby Groot, including his memories, in the past. When directly asked if Baby Groot remembered any events before the end of Guardians of the Galaxy, the movie's writer-director, James Gunn, stated simply, “No. He has no memories of adult Groot.” This led many viewers to wonder why Baby Groot did not remember his past life, given that he grew from twigs from adult Groot that Rocket gathered and planted. According to Gunn, “First Groot is dead. Baby Groot is his son.” This means that Baby Groot is a different character than the original Groot, proving that Baby Groot does not remember adult Groot’s life even if his drawing seems to suggest otherwise.

While the other characters’ reactions to Groot’s picture reinforce that Baby Groot has no earlier memories, they also reveal the hidden importance of the drawing. Baby Groot is excited by his creation, which represents a family hug rather than adult Groot’s rescue. In contrast, Rocket speaks in a nostalgic tone when Baby Groot hands him the picture. He immediately comments, “Oh, look how big you are,” signaling that the picture reminds him of his old friend. In this way, Baby Groot’s drawing in I Am Groot is a poignant reminder of his origin without breaking canon about his memories of the past. But considering James Gunn has denied I Am Groot canonically links to his Guardians of the Galaxy movies, despite Marvel's claim it's part of MCU Phase 4, none of the clarification matters anyway.

I Am Groot: The Emoji Era Comedy That Breaks New Ground for the MCU

Disney+'s I Am Groot is a little bit out of Marvel's current timeline, as it is the five bite-size episode story of a growing Groot, set before the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy. It is a series that stands on its own, even if it may be considered canon, but also the first Marvel Cinematic Universe show that is fully a comedy. However, the series embraces that genre by defining Groot as an emoji.

Groot has been seen growing back into adulthood after James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, but his baby figure became somewhat cute and iconic. The MCU decided to give the character another chance, stepping back in the timeline to his even younger self, tiny and adorable, and considered canon to itself. Kirsten Lepore was chosen to direct the small-episode run, a veteran in animation with Cartoon Network's Adventure Time. The spinoff series also sees the return of Vin Diesel to voice the younger Groot, and a short cameo by Gunn.

In a conversation with Empire magazine, Lepore explains how I Am Groot is a tonal departure for the studio, even with major films playing up a lot of comedic moments throughout the MCU's four Phases. "There aren't a lot of comedy shows on the Marvel animation roster, so even though they are shorts, we really got to play up how funny they are," she explains. Comedy in the MCU has recently been discussed with the silliness in Thor: Love and Thunder and how Taika Waititi approached his vision of the god of thunder's storyline.

"As much as it's still Groot and he's still cute, he's also a little bad baby who's very mischievous," continues Lepore, also saying it was an opportunity to explore a different side of the MCU by approaching quintessential scenarios of a normal growing child, while getting a chance to "just go wild and make it weird and rude and sci-fi." Each episode will address things like bath-time, dressing up, drawing, etc. The series will also keep its soundtrack in the 1960s and '70s, but while Peter Quill's mixtape in Guardians was purely American, the series turns global with South American and African tunes.

Before production, the director also spent some time with James Gunn discussing Groot's character, and she recalls him saying that Groot is essentially an emoji. In an era that is so reliant on emojis to show our own feelings and states of mind, Groot appears as a cute figure with not much more than two eyes and a mouth, making his simple nature quite relatable. "It's the bare minimum of what you need for a lot of expression," she adds. Groot's simple expressions will undoubtedly create the funniest moments for whatever situation he might be in.

With Bradley Cooper's Rocket Racoon confirmed as a cameo, Lepore also teases a James Gunn Easter egg and references "his fellow Guardians who may or may not make an appearance," leaving fans, who are already craving Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3, even more hyped.

Marvel Confirms I Am Groot’s Place in the MCU Timeline

The upcoming I Am Groot animated series at Disney+ will feature the early days of Groot growing up, but now fans know exactly when in the overarching Marvel Cinematic Universe it will take place.

Read More Post About -> I Am Groot

Speaking to ComicBook, Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation at Marvel Studios Brian Winderbaum revealed that the upcoming five-episode series will take place between the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the post-credits scene of the second film which shows Groot having already aged into a teenaged version of himself.

“It’s a narrow window, right? It takes place actually between the end of Guardians 2 and before the tag scene in Guardians 2. So, it’s in this narrow window where Groot [is] in that kind of post toddler stage of development,” Winderbaum said. “And it was something that really excited, James [Gunn] and also, James also knew [Kirsten Lepore]’s work and was excited about working with her as well.”

Of course, because the window of time with Groot being as small as he is in I Am Groot and the Guardians not being involved in any MCU events is small, the team behind the series had to find the perfect window to fit the series into, and it seems as if they did.

The official synopsis says that I Am Groot will look at Baby Groot’s “glory days growing up, and getting into trouble, among the stars.”Lepore, known for her animation and short film work, will be directing and executive producing the series.

Watch: Marvel's Groot Gets His Own Disney+ Show In New Trailer

Marvel Studios has released an official trailer for I Am Groot, the upcoming series of animated shorts set to drop on Disney+ in August.

Consisting of five shorts, I Am Groot is slated to premiere on Disney+ on Wednesday, Aug. 10. The trailer, released during San Diego Comic-Con 2022, offers a glimpse at the various antics Baby Groot will get up to in the series, including becoming a god-like figure to a race of tiny, adorable aliens; putting his (apparent) knowledge of explosives to use; and more.

Marvel Studios' I Am Groot was initially announced for Disney+ during The Walt Disney Company's Investor Day in December 2020, with Variety later describing the project as a series of "'photo-real' animated shorts centered on Baby Groot." Given the fact that these shorts specifically focus on Baby Groot, I Am Groot would ostensibly take place between the events of 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy and 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, or thereabouts. However, Guardians series director James Gunn has implied that I Am Groot may not be canon to the main Marvel Cinematic Universe. "They're canon to themselves, I'd think," Gunn said of the shorts.

Groot Has Had Quite the Journey in the MCU
Created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber and Jack Kirby, the original version of Groot first appeared in 1960's Tales to Astonish #13. A different version of Groot would later factor into Marvel Comics' Annihilation: Conquest crossover, subsequently joining the 2008 iteration of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Groot made his live-action debut in Gunn's 2014 MCU film Guardians of the Galaxy, with Vin Diesel providing the character's voice. While Groot sacrificed himself towards the end of the film, he was soon reborn as Baby Groot, who went on to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. One of the sequel's mid-credit scenes revealed that at some point after the main events of the film, Groot had grown into a teenager.

Teen Groot later appeared in 2018's Avengers: Infinity War, 2019's Avengers: Endgame and, most recently, this year's Thor: Love and Thunder. Audiences will once again see Groot in Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is currently scheduled to release in theaters on May 5, 2023. In the interim, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is expected to premiere on Disney+ this December.

Marvel Studios' Next Disney+ Project Releasing In Theaters Early

The upcoming I Am Groot animated series is set to be an extremely unique project within the MCU. Although very little has been revealed about the show, with not so much as a teaser having seen the light of day (even with only a month to go before its release), the things that have been announced certainly set it apart.

The show, which sees the titular twig getting into all sorts of trouble, marks a new chapter in the MCU, serving as the first mainstream project to exist wholly outside of the franchise canon. Also unique to the series is its structure, with the animated project being presented as a collection of shorts rather than a singular coherent narrative.

Besides these bits of information, fans have also gotten a look at the show through other means. A single poster released alongside the show's release date reveal shows off I Am Groot's tone and art style, while a set of toys releasing alongside the series hints at a wide range of looks and actions for the little sapling's adventures.

While so little being known about the upcoming I Am Groot is already fairly strange, things are about to get even weirder.

I Am Groot Debuts in Theaters Alongside Thor 4
One short episode of the upcoming I Am Groot series will be debuting early, hitting screens exclusively at the El Capitan Theatre on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, confirms the venue's social media account. The short, titled "Magnum Opus," will play before certain showings of Thor: Love and Thunder, though only between July 18-24.

Included in the announcement is a new poster for the series, presumably showing off the kind of hijinks the character will get up to in the short.

Why Is I Am Groot Hitting Theater Screens?
This announcement by The El Capitan Theater is certainly a surprise, both because of the novelty of this sort of distribution deal and the extreme narrowness of its debut. Sure, "Magnum Opus" is making it out to fans early, but in an extremely restricted form. Not only is the short limited to one theater during a relatively short window, but the episode is also only playing before one specific showing each day, "the 4:15pm showings on July 18 & 19, and the 1pm showings July 20-24."

Marvel has pulled similar tricks before, like when it announced that the trailer for the long-awaited Avatar sequel would be premiering exclusively in front of screenings of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. However, this ploy hit theaters everywhere, allowing Disney to promote the upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water while also incentivizing a wider range of fans to come out for the surreal Doctor Strange sequel.

The goal here is likely similar, if potentially less effective. While the deal struck with The El Capitan Theater will keep this move from making a significant impact on Thor: Love and Thunder's box office prospects, it certainly can't hurt, also helping to bring attention to I Am Groot, a project with a great deal less fervor surrounding it.

It is also certainly possible that Marvel feels the I Am Groot series is more impressive than it may seem and hopes that by getting some initial impressions out, a more appropriate level of excitement can develop. However, with no footage released so far for the animated collection of shorts, jumping straight to a limited release of a single episode seems like an odd marketing tactic.

Although the move is certainly a curious one, it at the very least means that fans in the Los Angeles area will have a chance to check out a new piece of MCU content much sooner than expected. For everyone else, I Am Groot drops on Disney+ on August 10.

Groot's Disney+ Spin-off Receives New Poster, Release Date & More

Whilst the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy prepare for what will be a jam-packed 2023, their fellow Flora Colossus, Groot, is prepping for his own adventure. I Am Groot is a Guardians spin-off set to debut later this year on Disney+, focusing on Baby Groot, as he gets up to all sorts of intergalactic shenanigans.

Announced back in December 2020, I Am Groot will offer up bite-sized doses of the MCU fandom's favorite walking flora. The project is being helmed by Canadian film director Ryan Little, who is serving as head writer on the series. And Kirsten Lepore, of Adventure Time fame, will take her place in the director's chair.

Not too much is known about the pint-sized Marvel series, but recent news has determined exactly when the world will end up seeing it.

I Am Groot Gets a Release Date

Marvel Studios unveiled the release date for I Am Groot, alongside a new poster for the upcoming Disney+ series.

The Groot-centric collection of streaming shorts will debut on the service on August 10, with the project centered on "Baby Groot’s glory days growing up, and getting into trouble among the stars," according to its new synopsis.

Get Ready For Groot

Since his debut in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, Groot has quickly become one of the most universally beloved characters in the MCU. That adoration only increased when the world was introduced to his pocket-sized variant, Baby Groot.

So to finally see when this little guy will be getting his own series will be an exciting prospect for many. Not too much is given away in the announcement here; however, there are a few small notes one can glean from it.

One of the more interesting aspects of this unveil is the focus on music - a theme that runs deep in the Guardians franchise as a whole. If in fact, the headphones seen atop Groot's head in the poster here are most than just set decoration, perhaps audiences could be treated to a brand-new rocking soundtrack, serving as an 'Awesome Mix Vol 2.5' before fans get the full 3.0 version in next year's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Another fascinating aspect of this announcement is the release date itself. It is unclear if this will be a weekly release or dropping all at once. August is getting pretty packed on Diseny+ with Andor and She-Hulk both starting their runs in that same calendar month. So, if I Am Groot is expected to drop weekly, it may end up getting lost in the shuffle as its bigger cousins start to appear on the service.

I Am Groot is set to debut on Disney+ on August 10.
